Caritas Silver Jubilee: What Happened on January 21, 1989

What Happened on January 21, 22, 23, 1989

January 21, 1989, 5:40 p.m.

“I am calling you to prayer; only through prayer can you come close to God. I am calling you to pray every day and to dedicate a special time in your day only for prayer.”

Marija, having sufficiently recovered from the surgery that removed one of her kidneys so she could give it to her brother who was suffering from kidney disease, had less than a week before she would fly to Italy for more rest before returning to Medjugorje. In Her messages, Our Lady again stresses the importance of finding a particular time of the day for personal prayer. She mentioned this in the November 25, 1988 message that was also given in the Bedroom.

November 25, 1988

“…little children, during the day find yourselves a special time when you can pray in peace and humility and have this meeting with God, the Creator…Watch in vigil so that every encounter in prayer be the joy of your contact with God…”

The Caritas Community’s daily 5 AM prayer in the Field was partly birthed through the determination to live the above words of Our Lady. For several years, Caritas’ founder had tried to find a consistent time of day that he could dedicate to God in prayer. With four young children, a successful landscaping and excavating business, and the growing demands of the new organization that he had started, Caritas of Birmingham, there were constant interruptions throughout the day and night, regardless of what time he decided to pray. He often prayed to Our Lady to help him find the best hour of the day for this encounter with God, when finally the Holy Spirit enlightened him to the fact that if he simply gave up one hour of sleep every morning, he would be assured of having the hour of prayer without interruptions. Since the summer of 1990, 5 AM prayer has been established on a daily basis, first in the life of Caritas’ founder, and then in the lives of the Caritas Community members who followed after him. The first hour of the day is given to God and Our Lady in prayer each morning—whatever the season, whatever the weather, regardless of how much sleep they had, or didn’t have the night before. They are there, in prayer, watching in vigil, in living out Our Lady’s request.

morning prayer

Wrapped in blankets, scattered around Our Lady’s statue in the early morning hour, with only a few candles to offer a little light in the darkened Field, Caritas Community members give their first hour of the day to God in prayer. The prayer is offered in silence, from the heart, asking for God’s blessing upon a fresh day.

Morning Prayer with the Morning Star—a rosy haze slowly envelopes the Field as the sun rises, where the heads of the households and single consecrated men and women of the Caritas community meet every morning for prayer before daybreak.

January 22, 1989, 5:40 p.m.

“I wish you to pray for my intentions. Only in this way can you come closer to God. I will guide you to Him. Pray, dear children, I am with you.”

January 23, 1989, 5:40 p.m.

“I would like you to pray for my intentions.”

Again, Our Lady gave a private message.

***********

Caritas founder again questioned Our Lady, through Marija, concerning what he had asked Her on January 20th. Our Lady responded to his question which made him realize more fully that She would answer the question some time in the future.

It is amazing that Our Lady asks us to pray for Her special intentions, yet when a priest calls for special intentions during Mass, it is rare that you hear requests for the intentions of Our Lady. While Marija was in Birmingham, Alabama, Our Lady asked us to pray for Her intentions seven times. Our Lady knows our needs better than we ourselves do. Perhaps it may sometimes be better, when we have the opportunity during Mass, to ask for Our Lady’s intentions rather than always asking for our own specific intentions because near Birmingham Our Lady said:

January 17, 1989

“Pray for my intentions. With this prayer, I would like to help each of you.”

We ask all of you to pray for Our Lady’s intentions daily and to mention them during petitions during Mass. Ask all priests, Medjugorje centers, teachers, etc. to enthusiastically plant this seed in the hearts of many people so they will have the enthusiastic desire to pray for Our Lady’s intentions. Perhaps by spreading this and encouraging others to do so, we will do more to bring about Our Lady’s plans than anything we could possibly do as individuals.
