lease enter into prayer before beginning. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and its consequences, blame has been placed on many. But what happened before Katrina? Why such a devastation? This major writing necessitates that you pray to the Holy Spirit before reading. It will read different to you if you do not pray. Therefore, for your future and your children, family and loved ones, please kneel for a few moments praying from the heart that the Holy Spirit will enlighten you with wisdom before you begin the following.

Jesus said,

“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.” Luke 21:25

December 26, 2004 - A tsunami hits Sri Lanka, India and other nations. Many officials say it was one of the world’s greatest natural disasters of recorded history. Over 300,000 people were killed from one moment to the next.1

August 29, 2005 - Hurricane Katrina strikes the Gulf Coast with a wave surge unprecedented in our nation’s history. President Bush states, “It’s the greatest natural disaster in our nation’s history.” From one moment to the next, people not only lost their lives, but over one million people of those surviving lost homes, businesses, everything and were displaced with nowhere to go.2 Almost unbelievably, Katrina continued her way through the United States, causing flooding and more damage from high winds. She entered into Canada with 60 mile an hour wind gusts and almost seven inches of rain in 12 hours, causing breakdowns and failures in the road systems. The whole region of Cote Nord, Canada was isolated from Quebec, due to the storm, for more than a week. It was Katrina’s last destruction before she disappeared.3

October 4, 2005 - Hurricane Stan strikes Mexico and Central America. In El Salvador and Guatemala, the storm hit in the sixth month of a six-month rainy season. Whole villages were buried from mudslides, some of which officials will leave as a national cemetery as they were unable to even attempt to uncover the bodies.4

October 8, 2005 - Pakistan, India and Afghanistan are struck with a massive earthquake killing over 50,000 people, with five million people left homeless with no place to go. The number of homeless was larger than the population of some nations. Archbishop Saldanha said, “This was the greatest natural disaster in our country’s history.” 5

October 21, 2005 - Hurricane Wilma was the most rapid increasing hurricane to a Category 5 ever undergone by a tropical cyclone anywhere on the face of the earth. Experts were mystified as Wilma exploded into the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. Meteorologist Buzz Bennard said, “It just absolutely blows me away. The rule of thumb is a hurricane will intensify one category per day. This one did four in 12 hours." 6 Wilma stopped above Cancun and battered it so hard that beaches disappeared and the hotels themselves turned into very expensive beach breaks. Afterwards, Wilma went on to devastate portions of Florida.7

In the Fall of 2005, there have been other major events in Europe such as Portugal drying up; a drought of droughts unlike anything people have seen before.8 Spain is experiencing its worst drought ever recorded.9 Meanwhile, Scotland is besieged with floods.10

The “never befores” above happened in the course of only a little over nine month’s time! The time of birth. Many are perplexed. Many wonder what is happening. Is Heaven acting? Even the godless media is speaking of God and questioning why. Jesus spoke of those who will hear the roaring of the waves and become perplexed. He said that,

“People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” Luke 21:26

Noah and the Ark seems to be a little story taking only three pages in the Bible. In reading it, we can fall into a false image and understanding of the events that are read in a compressed time frame on paper, when instead it took well over 60 years or more to unfold. That is decades of time. Our Lady has come to save the whole world, and yet we are only approaching 25 years since the beginning of Our Lady’s apparitions. This is a very short time period with a much bigger and complex world than Noah’s to untangle. In review of Scripture and/or history, we often read about events that took place over long periods of time, yet we lose the feeling, reality and longevity of the event or sequences. We also see this in reading Jesus’ words from the Bible; that one hundred years seems but a single day. In the future, when reading about what Our Lady has done over these 25 years, we will see it as a very short period of time; even though for us living through these years, it seems like a long time.

Before His death, Jesus gave a synopsis of events that would unfold in the future and though it seemed it would all occur one after another, the actual time frame is over several centuries, even millenniums. The big question we should be asking during this unprecedented time is, “where are we in this synopsis of Jesus’ words?”

Luke 21:5-36

“While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, he said (Jesus), ‘All that you see here - the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.’

Then they asked him, ‘Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?’ He answered, ‘See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, “I am he,” and “The time has come.” Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.’ Then He said to them, ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.

Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.

When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its desolation is at hand. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Let those within the city escape from it, and let those in the countryside not enter the city, for these days are the time of punishment when all the scriptures are fulfilled. Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for a terrible calamity will come upon the earth and a wrathful judgment upon this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken as captives to all the Gentiles; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the “strength” to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.’”

Jesus’ words describing the destruction of the Temple came to pass around 70 AD. The first great Christian persecution had just begun and went on until approximately 300 AD. Yet, the reader may think everything happened before the Temple’s destruction because Jesus’ words state, “Before all this happens they will seize and persecute you.” Indeed, Peter was martyred in 67 AD, but great persecution occurred through periods of time long after the Temple’s destruction. These are some of the reasons the Bible cannot be read literally, but must be interpreted with a view of the whole Bible. But that does not mean it cannot be read and understood. Holy Scripture can often be applied to different periods of history for our benefit because Scripture has life.

For example, many scholars and members of the Church recognize Nero, an emperor who greatly persecuted the Church, as the anti-christ, whose name sums up the number 666. Every Hebrew letter has numerical value and many possible combinations will add up to 666. This example of Nero being the anti-christ 11 (he died in 68 AD) shows that John’s words can be applied to past events, but that does not exclude the fact that in the future we will also have an anti-christ, the ultimate anti-christ. Scripture applies to all ages, until the end of time. This point made, it then is understandable that Christ’s words in Scripture speak of different eras and times, and so can be used to benefit men as an impulse to change hearts and lead to conversion. As time passes, we can see more clearly the words of the Bible.

Revelation 13: 16-18

“It (the anti-christ) forced all the people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads, so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image of the beast’s name or the number that stood for its name.” (666)

Before the advent of the micro-computer chip, data keeping, accounts and debit cards, etc., the above verse could not be grasped in so far as how an anti-christ could control all commerce. Now, however, any fifth grader could formulate a plan of how goods and services around the world could be managed and controlled in our present system to a point where no one could either buy or sell unless having a stamp. This writing, however, is not about predicting an anti-christ or about the anti-christ. Any writing on such a subject is prone to too many errors, for Christ said no one but the Father knows the hour or the day when Christ will come back. However, Christ does tell us to watch for the season.

“Consider the fig tree and all other trees. When buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know summer is now near...” Luke 21: 29-30

By these words we are to be on the lookout for the season. How long that season lasts, we do not know, but never in history have we had a time that could so clearly be ascribed to Jesus’ words. For example, starting at the beginning of the last century in 1917, a war of all nations, World War I began, followed by World War II and more wars on into the 1970s and beyond.

“When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.” Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” Luke 21: 9-10

World War I was nearly 100 years ago, a war to end all wars. But remember Jesus’ words cannot be re-read in the compressed history of one page. Jesus said of wars and insurrections, that it will not immediately be the end. But it’s part of the watch the “fig tree” warning. And now, we have the Pakistan earthquake, tsunamis, extreme famines in Africa, droughts, hurricanes, etc., - in which most all of them have been titled as “the worst” in the respective nation’s history or even in all the recorded history of the world. Jesus said:

“There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place...” Luke 21: 11

U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator, Jan Egeland, said on October 8, 2005, of the recent South Asian earthquake that:

“We never had this kind of logistical nightmare, ever. We thought the tsunami was the worst we could get. This is worse.” 12

Today, a plague of malaria is taking one child’s life in Africa every 30 seconds. It is such a crisis that officials are recommending bringing in the banned DDT chemical to kill mosquitoes to stop the plague.13 Another crisis looming is a potential plague in the making. As this is being written, health officials and experts are trying to prevent the possible deaths of 200 million people worldwide from a mutant bird flu, which, thus far contained, is lurking and threatening to break loose. Even though it cycles every 50 years, the plague’s potential to spread through a pipeline of people by a transit world of air transportation, automobiles and other mass transportation, has set nation after nation into red-alert action.14

But there have always been powerful earthquakes, famine and plagues from place to place. That is true, all the way back to Pompeii and beyond. But! Never has the world been doubled over by the sum of excessive misfortunes that are growing in magnitude each year. Life Magazine’s, September 1993 issue has a front cover headline entitled, “Why Has the Weather Gone Mad?” 15 The article states that in the year 1993, “The three most damaging climatic disasters in U.S. history happened in the past 12 months.” First, Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida. Then, on March 12, a giant blizzard, the single biggest storm of the century, hit. Third, relentless rain flooded the Midwest which brought on the costliest weather disaster of all as it devastated the crop yield for most of the Midwest.16 All these “first,” “greatest” and “most disastrous” conditions happened in 1993! Yet, every year, there are greater disasters. The 2005 disasters tops the top yet again. Add to that sum terrorism and hatred, and the heart of man that has grown cold and is without love, and its total begins to clearly add up to Jesus’ words:

Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulation...” Luke 21: 36

Astoundingly, especially for those who know of Medjugorje, none of these disasters and events are the secrets of Medjugorje, secrets in which we know three of them are admonitions for the world. The present events we are living through are serving to condition us to bring us closer to God, before the secrets unfold, in order to help us through them. It does not matter if the end is 10 years or 300 years from now. It is clear. We are facing the birth pangs of tribulation. Though the time frame may be compressed to a few paragraphs of Jesus’ words in His synopsis, in the actual time frame of our life, it is expanded by decades. Decades we are experiencing now in the present, and even centuries that we do not experience with our life. These 25 years of apparitions are not only an extraordinary and unprecedented “first,” they are particular according to Our Lady’s words. These series of apparitions are without question biblical in nature, preparing the world for tribulation and ultimately its final battle. But at the same time, for us individually, to give us the path to peace in spite of what is happening to take peace away from us. That said, it is not important to know the timing of Jesus’ words. That is immaterial. What is important is to understand what we are to do once we see the leaves on the fig tree beginning to burst open, as now so many things point to this. To know that answer, what we are to do, is to retreat from the world scene that has been shown in this writing of continents, nations, states, cities and towns, down to the man on the street. It is he to whom Our Lady is speaking. He is what makes up the world and it is man that will determine his fate through tribulation. Remember Jesus said, Pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulation.” We must realize that Our Lady has been coming to the world for 25 years, everyday, pleading with us to help save the world:

February 25, 1988

“… Dear children, satan is very strong and, therefore, I ask you to dedicate your prayers to me so that those who are under his influence may be saved. Give witness by your life, sacrifice your lives for the salvation of the world…”

Twenty-five years of telling us to pray and use this time well...

March 25, 2000

“…Pray and make good use of this time because this is a time of grace…”

...that we cannot imagine what God will send to the earth...

June 24, 1983

“…You cannot imagine what is going to happen nor what the Eternal Father will send to earth…”

...that we must convert before it’s too late...

December 15, 1982

“Hurry to be converted. Do not wait for the great sign. For the unbelievers, it will then be too late to be converted…”

We must live what She says, be under Her mantle, so that it will go well with us:

March 21, 1985

“…accept me, dear children, that it might go well with you…”

On April 5, 1984, Our Lady told us how deeply we offend God:

“…Make reparation for the wound inflicted on the Heart of my Son. That Heart is offended by all kinds of sin…”

We must realize that God is greatly offended by the world and that satan argues before God’s justice that the world has betrayed God and he (satan) should, in justice, be allowed to destroy it. satan intends to lead the world to ruin and then present it to God’s court with the argument of justice so he, satan, can destroy it. The reality is that satan’s cunning scheme is to test God’s patience. satan wants to make the world a spiritual desert and, as he brings it to wickedness, he is always ready to remind God of how the world descends into a cesspool. Our Lady reveals it to us.

February 17, 1984

“My children, pray! The world has been drawn into a great whirlpool. It does not know what it is doing. It does not realize in what sin it is sinking. It needs your prayers so that I can pull it out of this danger.”

Thus far, by the above and the message below, it is clear the Virgin Mary in our lifetime has saved the world from satan’s schemes to destroy the world.

January 25, 1991

“…satan is strong and wishes not only to destroy human life but also nature and the planet on which you live…”

The prince of darkness cannot do anything except what God allows, and satan is always building his case before God. Our persistence in and our denial of sin in our lives causes the withdrawal of God’s blessing of protection. This, in turn, creates a void for satan to fill and act within. If you doubt that, and yet believe Our Lady’s words, it is She who said the world is being drawn into a great whirlpool. It was Her words just quoted that said satan wants to destroy everything, even the whole planet on which we live! Does God want that? Certainly not. It’s why He sends Our Lady. But what is frightful is that man does not want to change and it is his sinful nature, and especially the denial of sin in our age, that cries out for our destruction. Yes, God is merciful and wants to give us mercy. Our Lady’s coming is God’s mercy. But how many are listening? If we refuse to listen to, refuse to heed Our Lady’s voice that is coming everyday from Heaven, what will happen? In the New Testament, in the era of time specifically applied to Christianity, the book of Hebrews tells us that the Israelites refused to listen and to heed God when He spoke on earth to them, through Moses. They, in turn, did not escape punishment. Hebrews tells us, the New Testament man, how much greater punishment will be ours if we turn away from Him Who is speaking from Heaven and that created things will be shaken! Some saints tell us that nature rises up to purify and defend God’s ways and Hebrew 12 exhorts New Testament man to listen when God speaks. It tells us that not to heed God’s voice is a far graver sin in the Christian era than the Israelites’ rejection of the word of Moses in pre-Christian time.

“Do not refuse to hear Him who speaks, for if the Israelites did not escape punishment when they refused to listen as God spoke to them on Earth, how much greater punishment will be ours if we turn away from Him who speaks from Heaven!” Hebrews 12:25

Now Our Lady comes giving messages in which She says are conveyed from God in Heaven.

July 25, 1985

“…Today I am calling you to listen to my messages and then you will be able to live everything that God tells me to convey to you…”

Again, how many are listening? How many of Our Lady’s children have sufficiently changed their lives? How many heed Her voice of what God conveys through the visionary, Marija, just as He did through Moses? Many are trying, and many want to and are praying to change. Therefore, tribulation is an answer to those who have asked for help, but a curse for those who reject Our Lady. It is God’s desire to communicate His Love to those in this age who desire Him. In tribulation, those with “good will” turn towards God, those with “bad will” turn away from Him. The good-willed are purified by God as sons over time, the bad-willed are struck instantly.

“My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when He reproves you. For whom the Lord loves He disciplines...”
Hebrews 12:5-6

Before proceeding, it is important to read what follows with the understanding that everyday we are moving closer to the Ten Secrets of Medjugorje, including the chastisements, being fulfilled. The visionaries of Medjugorje are reaching middle age, and they were told by Our Lady that the secrets would happen in their lifetime. Mirjana, the visionary who is responsible for giving the written secrets to the priest of her choice when Our Lady gives her permission, chose Fr. Petar who is already 58 years old. It appears, from recent world events, that a trail of many different devastations will lead toward the three chastisements. How we accept and respond to these devastations is vitally important to our future, that we grow in holiness which is our only security. There have been decades of prayer for our country’s renewal and conversion being sent up to Heaven from Christians of every faith and denomination. Also, there are many who are Jewish, and even Muslims who have been praying for our nation. We know we must be purified of that which leads us away from God. Therefore, we can only look at recent events as coming from God in answer to our prayers for the reconciliation of ourselves, our families and our nation back to God.

In order to understand this, we are suppose to read Sacred Scripture. It is not reserved only for theologians. We, especially Catholics, have been conditioned that a professor of theology is the only one who can tell us what the Bible means. Sacred Scripture has life and speaks to us of not only our daily lives and through inspiration, but also through the signs of the times. Jesus’ own words of Scripture are given in parables to simple people so as to be easily understood. To think we cannot use, read or study Scripture unless we have taken a Bible study course or a theological course is satan’s lie. Which came first - the events of the Bible or the Bible scholar? Our Lady makes it clear that you do not have to be a Bible scholar to read and use the Bible for your life. Our Lady said in the early days:

Reported by Fr. Jozo (Date Unknown):

You have forgotten the Bible.”

And on October 18, 1984:

“…I call on you to read the Bible every day in your homes and let it be in a visible place so as always to encourage you to read it and to pray…”

The pervasive mentality that only those who have had theology courses are to tell others what Scripture means and how we should think is shattered by Our Lady’s words.

February 14, 1985

“...Every family must pray family prayer and read the Bible...”

But what of the danger that someone not schooled about the Bible will misunderstand and misuse it? Certainly that has happened. But there are far, far more scholars and theologians who have misused the Bible and led many astray, than those who do not have such credentials. The Holy Spirit is often squelched in the human ego by credentials when more wisdom can be found in the prayerful man walking the streets, who lives the Bible instead of always teaching about it. Is what is being written opposed to those advanced in theology and biblical knowledge? In some aspects, no, and in some aspects, yes. There are saints who were advanced in theological knowledge with impressive degrees, but they exercised that knowledge through holy wisdom rather than depending solely on learned facts and theories and therefore, they set the example for holy use of theology. Knowledge without wisdom is what has created the abyss by which we now suffer. Many of today’s authority and teaching positions are filled with those who do not possess holy wisdom, but only intellectual knowledge that is devoid of the Spirit of God and of convictions.

Why be so critical? Why highlight the point? Because we perpetuate a problem that is bringing upon us tribulation if we do not address it. The Catholic city, New Orleans, devastated by Hurricane Katrina by an act of God, had below it another powerful hurricane, Rita, which was headed to Houston, Texas. Still shocked by the recent devastation of the last hurricane, the nation’s eyes and ears were riveted to the news, following the advancement of Rita. It was at this time that the mayor of New Orleans, being interviewed about conditions in the city, literally and blatantly used God’s name in vain publicly on TV and radio.17 Blasphemy! And little or no Catholic resistance to denounce this action. Perhaps a small few may have said something from the pulpit but for the most part, indignation from Catholic voices of the region were silent. We are talking about public blasphemy. Where was the outcry? Where were the voices aggressively denouncing the actions of the mayor of a well-known Catholic city? Why was there not a press conference to distance all Catholics from such an action? Even if there was no time between the blasphemous statements and Rita hitting, why not an outcry in the aftermath? This silence or weak reaction to the mayor’s blasphemy was deafening to God because He, the Creator of Nature, heard it. So was it any surprise at all that Hurricane Rita, a few days later, slightly changed its course to again batter New Orleans, overthrowing the levees again? Who’s responsible? The mayor? Or those who practice quietism, while God the Creator is publicly blasphemed? Public blasphemy demands remorse and a public apology to those Christians who should be greatly offended because God has been offended by such an action. Who is the most responsible to uphold accountability for the mayor’s blasphemy? New Orleans citizens? They were overwhelmed with their woes. But that is exactly when we need the Catholic hierarchy to say we accept no mayor who blasphemes God under any circumstance. Our Lady said:

March 18, 1996

“…Do not reject from yourself the name of God, that you may not be rejected…”

We are not called to the lie of live and let live. We are called to convict and change those around us by our lives of conviction, through wisdom. The Bible says:

“In wisdom made perfect, instruct and admonish one another.”
Colossians 3:16

Our Lady is Wisdom. Her words give wisdom to bring enlightenment to the Bible. Do not reject God so that you may not be rejected. New Orleans lost protection, yet again, by God being rejected by its leader, and because that which is salt is flat and is silent. Those who should have been first to repudiate publicly this action of the mayor, as Scripture states in wisdom, “admonish one another,” is the salt that has gone flat, that no longer has courage to convict because of being in fear of man and what he might think. No, we are called to fear God, not man. It’s not important to weigh out both sides of a decision when the right thing to do is clearly understood. It’s only important to choose the right thing to do and let the pieces fall where they may - whether it goes good for you or against you. A saint is someone who does the right thing no matter the cost to himself. We cannot carry a convicting spirit if we stop and consider the possible harm that may come to us as a result of making a right decision. Just doing the right thing will convict, making one true salt of the earth which perserves.

Several years ago, Caritas community members were in New Orleans spreading Medjugorje material. In front and around several Catholic churches were palm readers and those involved in sorcery and black magic, which is very widespread in the area. In the Old Testament, King Saul lost his kingship. Later in desperation, he went disguised to a fortuneteller who, not recognizing him, said to Saul, “You are surely aware of what Saul has done, in driving the mediums and fortune-tellers out of the lands.” 1 Samuel 28:9 Saul, himself, knew the security and protection of Israel was dependent upon clearing Israel of these mediums and the practice of necromancy. Saul did this because the Bible shows that God hated these practices more than any other sins of man. 1 Samuel 28:3

God has not changed in regard to these sins, yet the deafening silence of His chosen ones reaches God. Just in front of Catholic churches in New Orleans these sins, which are greatly offensive to God, are ignored. Do you think God would hold it a sin to eradicate the stench of the New Orleans soothsayers? Would not hundreds, if not thousands of Catholics follow their bishops and priests if they led such a cleansing? The Church membership is not only suffering because of these evils in their cities, but because they are starving for something to be done and will follow strong leadership. We do not need more conferences forming paper declarations or talks, but rather we need actions.

In Medjugorje in the early 1990s, a souvenir seller was told by the Catholic village men not to be on Apparition Hill selling souvenirs. One night, a villager decided to set up a card table full of souvenirs just off the trail at the top of Apparition Hill. Several men of the village spotted him and strongly told him to leave. He refused, and without so much as a second of hesitation, his table was turned over and destroyed. The man left and ran down the hill. To this day, Apparition Hill remains free of souvenir sellers. God’s laws of love are for Him first, and we are not in accord with love of neighbor when we tolerate everything. Love of neighbor deems we protect him from what is harmful and causes the loss of God’s protection. Judas Maccabees did it in cleansing Israel. Paul did it, calling for the removal of a community member, another time turning a community member’s flesh over to the devil in order to save him, and Christ did it also. Read the Bible. Today, all we hear about is mercy, and yes, God’s mercy is infinite. But God is infinitely just, and an unrighteous village, town, city or state will eventually experience that which must be punished in this life because a city, state or nation has no afterlife, so correction comes in this life. Founding Father George Mason said:

“As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world, they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes and effects, Providence punishes national sins by national calamities.” 18

There is a righteous intolerance and indignation that Jesus practiced in the Temple when He turned over the money-changing tables, when His apostles turned away the children, when Peter told Jesus not to go to Jerusalem, causing Him to say, “Get behind me satan,” and likely many incidences that are not recorded. Jesus was not a push over. Yes, be accepting of sinners and help them with conversion, but you do not help them by letting them continue in their sin. Christians are not called to be tolerant of sin, especially sin that, if not corrected, will cause themselves, along with those committing the sins, to suffer with the wicked.

Before Hurricane Katrina hit, the Catholic city of New Orleans was experiencing at least five murders a night, and often more, making it one of the “Murder Capitals of the World.” 19 What are God’s thoughts? We cannot know as man, but we can know by reasoning what His ways are toward man when repeated, flagrant, long-term violations against His Commandments are carried out as if these Commandments do not exist. The presence of the wicked has cursed New Orleans. For God’s protection of anyone’s town, it is important to be concerned with what God thinks and to clean up the streets of blatant idolatry and sorcery as Jesus cleansed the Temple. It starts not with politicians or those who promote sin and the right to commit sin, but with Christians becoming intolerant. Our Christian leaders must rise up to the occasion. Why such silence to these sins, or at the very most a weak response to it? Read the New Testament. Why did so many poor souls lose their homes when it could have been avoided? Katrina avoided? A shocking statement? No, not really when you read the Bible or review history and see how many, many times eminent disaster was avoided. The city of Nineveh, in the days of Jonah, changed their way of life in 40 days and was spared. Many battles in history were fought and, through the Rosary, were won against all odds. But certain ingredients are always necessary: acknowledgement of sins, repentance, righteously living God’s precepts, and purifying towns of wickedness. Realize that Hurricane Katrina was a fruit from a tree that grew from a city’s way of life that lost God’s protection. The next words are very important to think about, memorize and to place in the heart. Maria Valtorta, in her work, The Poem of the Man God,* wrote a statement that Jesus told her:

“A people are not so much protected by its armaments as they are by their way of life.” 20

Armaments, levee walls, police forces, etc., all fail when citizens, to a high degree, tolerate, ignore and are silent to sin and wickedness.

Every year since 1988, when Our Lady appeared on Thanksgiving Day in the Field at Caritas, a married couple with friends flee New Orleans on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. Like clockwork, they travel to Alabama, telling us they cannot stand being in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. They tell us, “The depravity and the demonic spirit of evil is so strong and pervasive, we literally flee New Orleans, from this event.” Is it sinful to say that New Orleans has lost its protection from God? Is it judgmental? No, but the natural man would say it is, because he does not receive the things of the spirit. It is foolish for the natural man because he does not know the spirit of God. However, he who spiritually judges all things cannot be judged correctly by anyone.

1 Corinthians 2:14-16

“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For ‘who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.”

We, as Christians, can judge, but are not called to condemn. We are called by Scripture to lift up our brothers, not in judgment in consigning someone to hell, but to point out grievous wrongs in order to help souls to go to Heaven. This is love. It takes strength, courage, commitment and living holy lives to do so. “Live and let live” is spiritual laziness and/or cowardice. It’s a philosophy that leads to a non-convicting, weak Christian life.

Are there good souls in New Orleans? Yes, we know many who are very close friends of our mission and who are holy souls such as the couple who comes to the Field every year, and we are certain there are many more we don’t know. If New Orleans was not entirely destroyed, it is due to these souls, and they should be thanked. When news reached Medjugorje about the devastation that had hit New Orleans, from the altar of St. James Church, prayers were offered for the citizens. New Orleans’ Catholics had been among the very first in our country to embrace and spread Medjugorje. Many of those same Catholics have remained faithful to Our Lady of Medjugorje over these many years. But the good always suffer for the bad. The life of Christ and the saints have shown us this. If New Orleans is to be resurrected, it must remember and return to its original Christian roots, especially Catholic roots. It must prevail over and crush the efforts of those who sponsor and promote wickedness. Citizens, especially Christians, must hold accountable both religious and secular authorities by witnessing, preaching, teaching and denouncing wickedness… that Mardi Gras, though a huge economic entity, must be slain, as well as everything that is associated with illicit behavior, sorcery and decadence. When certain events degrade beyond a certain point, purification can only be achieved through its destruction. Yes, the destruction of Mardi Gras, a call to Catholics not to support or participate in it in any way, as it has become a depraved act that should be stopped as a blasphemous way to start Lent. Is this an impossible achievement, even an unrealistic call for the end of Mardi Gras? Maybe so, being even laughable to many. But the reality and truth is that no one will ever cleanse Mardi Gras. Its dismantlement is the only way to discontinue a sinful tradition that will continue to risk the future of New Orleans, along with other issues already mentioned.

There may be many who will be angered by these writings. This is why it was important to pray before entering into reading this writing. To many, the Mardi Gras of Bourbon Street or the French Quarter in New Orleans is not their Mardi Gras. To many, Mardi Gras still holds within it family and church traditions and fond memories. But at the same time, it cannot be ignored that Mardi Gras was hijacked by the godless. They stole the name, they stole the dates, they stole the meaning and they use it to mock and blaspheme God right at the very entrance of the holiest time of year for Catholics. It is their Mardi Gras, the godless, the display of the body and sick acts that receives world attention every year, and the real significance of Mardi Gras is lost in the depravity and sinfulness of a hedonistic generation. It may take much prayer and wisdom to understand this, but if the Catholics of New Orleans were to decide that there will be no Mardi Gras parades and festivities this year, but instead they entered into a spirit of “sackcloth and ashes,” petitioning God to bring renewal to their city and beg God’s mercy and forgiveness, if during the days of Mardi Gras there would be fasting, penance and the sacrament of Reconciliation around the whole city, not only would God hear the cry of His people, but the godless would take notice as well. The godless prevail because Christians, especially Catholics, do not.

After September 11, 2001, many Americans were quoted as saying that we would not be forced into changing our way of life by terrorist actions. In the sense that we are Americans and we, therefore, stand for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” this is true of us. We cannot allow terrorists to build fear in us that would keep us from living our lives in peace without fear. But there must also be recognition among us that there are some ways of life in our country that God cannot bless that actually brings condemnation upon us. We must slay that which brings harm to us, our pocket books, and our traditions, even if it causes us grief to do so. What happens when one discovers cancer in their body? By every means possible the doctor works to get rid of the cancer so it cannot spread. Sometimes that means having a leg or arm cut off. It is grief to do so, but by cutting it off, the body is saved from certain death.

All who understand this must stand firm without fear of men and the argument of the economic impact of the city that New Orleans’ Mardi Gras is famous for. The truth is it is infamous before God. If your heart objects to this writing, do your own research. Look up what goes on in New Orleans, with not only Mardi Gras, but events such as Girls Gone Wild and Southern Decadence. The latter one cannot be logically debated against as the event not only is equal with Sodom and Gomorrah, but very likely surpasses it in evil. When doing your own research, look up the date that the annual event of “Southern Decadence” was to take place. You will find it was scheduled for August 31, two days after Katrina hit and flooded the city.21 New Orleans has an opportunity to rise up as a holy city and a great Catholic city. Katrina is an opportunity to reconcile all back to God. If this opportunity is not seized by leadership within the Church, what will be the future fate of the city? For obviously, without leadership from the Church, the above suggestion would be almost impossible to have success. The question must be asked. Which will it be? The choice to fear God or to fear man? Those who are members of the Church yearn for their leaders to lead. People are not being fed. Many are languishing, crying out for the strengthening of the living of God’s precepts, which lend itself to a way of life that leads to protection. The members must be fed and fortified with strong, clear moral principles.

There is a disconnection in understanding the present needs and hunger of the Church membership by those who they willingly submit to, as shown by the following. Archbishop Gregory of Atlanta, while in Rome attending the Synod of Bishops on the Eucharist, addressed the Bishops on October 11, 2005, said the Vatican itself released the following information:

“‘In the United States of America, some of our Catholic people will go to Sunday Mass and then return home to listen to the radio or view the televised religious programming of other Christian denominations simply because they are still hungry for inspiring preaching. Still others go so far as to attend religious services at these other churches after they’ve attended Sunday Mass.’ The archbishop told synod participants that he has ‘repeatedly heard of people who regularly will travel excessive distances to participate in a Mass that has a celebrant with proven capability to offer a serious, moving and compelling homily.’ He offered a quote from the late German Cardinal Augustin Bea, who said, ‘a priest who was skilled in offering the Sacrifice in the Mass, but not in breaking open the Word of God for people, was only exercising half his priestly ministry.’” 22

Thus far, we have focused on New Orleans, but what of the rest of the Gulf Coast? Why such widespread destruction from Katrina? We must realize Scripture relates clearly that God allows negative actions of nature to get our attention. It is a wake-up call for us to reflect. Have we built idols? Are we living as a society in a way pleasing to God? So, again, reflection on the life of the Gulf Coast, which from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans, Louisiana, is primarily Catholics. In regards to Katrina, what are we being asked by God to wake up and see? A major part of the answer can be found in the South Mississippi newspaper, The Sun Herald, in the aftermath of Katrina, on the front page of the September 27, 2005 paper:

“We can survive on charity, but to thrive, we need casinos.”

Are the casinos and their false glitter the life God called us to thrive by? Or is it by living His commandments? With so many casinos on the Gulf Coast destroyed, as were the false idols of the Old Testament, is it possible that God is purifying the Gulf Coast of ways and means of living that are not His?

The word Katrina means to purify; purity

Is God purifying ways of living that are displeasing and not acceptable for God’s children to participate in, including working at them or voting for them? The Sun Herald writer ended the article with the following words:

“There are intricate details to be worked out but the quicker casinos can light up the night with ‘neon’ on the coast the ‘brighter’ the future will be for all Mississippi.”

In the beginning of August 2005, while Katrina began brewing in the Atlantic, half way around the world in the village of Medjugorje, Our Lady appeared to Mirjana and gave a startling message that we have never heard the like of before.

August 2, 2005

“Dear children, I have come to you with open hands in order to place you all in my embrace and under my mantle. I cannot do so as long as your hearts are filled with false glitter and idols. Clean your hearts…”

A little over 20 days later, Katrina crashed into the Gulf Coast, washing away and damaging much of the casinos and gambling industry. Another close translation from Croatian of false glitter is “false brightness.” The editorial comment of “light up the night with neon on the coast the brighter the future” is the lie. Casinos are “false glitter.” They foster a lie that leads to a life in which Our Lady says prevents Her from protecting us in “Her embrace” and “under Her mantle.” This is a clear statement that we will be protected if we clean our hearts. We must wash our hearts. This message from Our Lady is of a character we have never seen before, given while conditions were forming of what would be Katrina, moving on towards its targets! The gravity of this message is increased when one realizes that it was given on the anniversary of another ominous message at the beginning of the apparitions.

August 2, 1981

“…A great struggle is about to unfold. A struggle between my Son and satan. Human souls are at stake.”

The Gulf Coast must realize the gravity of what satan brings under the false promise of jobs, money, tax revenue, etc. And for what? For whole towns to be washed away? ‘Diluvium’ is a Latin word that means “wash away.” The word deluge is derived from the above Latin word and means a great quantity of something arriving at the same time. The ground area that is hardest hit when a hurricane passes through is east of the eye of the hurricane. It is ground zero, the worst and the most powerful part of the cyclone. With Hurricane Katrina, ground zero hit a heavily populated Catholic area with many statues of Our Lady adorning the homes of this town’s residents, but a town with their own casinos. Several of the town residents are Medjugorje people and devotees of Caritas. They call Our Lady’s holy sites where Our Lady has appeared at Caritas here in Alabama, “MejaBama.” We are very close to those good souls and, therefore, understand many things about their region. Along the coast of Mississippi, one witness saw during Katrina’s landfall, a 3-4 mile wide bay being emptied of water to the point of being able to see sand at the bottom of the bay, when suddenly it turned into a terrifying 30-foot plus high tsunami wave, literally “washing the coast,” Diluvium, “wash away.”

Is this a wake-up call? God’s call of mercy saying, the false glitter you’ve embraced, you’ve exchanged for my Mother’s embrace? This negative action of nature is an act of God. It did not just happen. Will it penetrate enough into our hearts to denounce these casinos and their being part of communities? In days of old, people were prayerfully enlightened and understood the signs God sent. They repented and changed the direction of their lives. They didn’t need an explanation except that it was an act of God. But today’s science always has an answer and explains disasters and events away as “something that just happened because conditions made it favorable,” etc., etc., etc., and so little or no impulse for repentance occurs or reflection that God may be trying to tell us something. Add that to not being spiritually fed and the future will repeat the past. We must change the direction of our lives.

Our Lady said on March 25, 1990:

“…God wants to save you and sends you messages through…nature…(to) help you to understand that you must change the direction of your life…"

Katrina is to purify you, to help you, to save you and lead you towards dependence upon God. These writings are not intended to demean or chastise anyone. We are all sinners. But rather, the hope of these writings is to incite the heart to redirect the building of holy cities, and the light shining from them to God be created from Our Lady’s heart emanating within our own, and not from the false glitter of casinos and other decadence. The signs God grants, His message through nature, is the writing on the wall and is not coded in secrecy. Read the Bible. Read Our Lady’s messages. All is easily discernable. Most who live in Las Vegas can get away with many things for the time being, but you can’t live in primarily Catholic cities and towns, devoted to Our Lady, praying to Her, without purification coming upon you because of Our Lady’s wish to wash your heart clean to lead you to Her embrace. She loves Her children. Scripture states that God purifies His children over time, but that He strikes the wicked instantly. Are we saying that Las Vegas is wicked? Yes. Plainly, clearly...yes. What else would one call a city that calls itself, “Sin City?” The city of Las Vegas has been nurtured and built on decadence. In many counties surrounding Las Vegas, prostitution is not only a thriving business, but a legal one. That is only one single item in a long list of decadent lifestyles that city promotes. We know of some people who live near Las Vegas for the purpose of trying to spread God’s light in the dense darkness of this city. But the question must be asked for those who believe this to be their mission territory, where is the fruit? Has the spiral downfall into wickedness of this city been arrested or even slowed down through their efforts? Is there any sign that their efforts are bringing redemption to this city? When the World Trade Center fell, there were many firemen that entered the towers to help save those in peril. But at a certain point, each fireman knew it was time to get out of the towers if they were going to survive themselves. When the towers fell, many of the rescuers died alongside those they were trying to save. The question must be asked. Is it time to get out? Katrina was a gift given to us to stop and take a “reality check.” What is God saying to us? The images of thousands of cars lined up on the freeway are still fresh in all our memories. People fleeing the cities to get out of danger. Is this prophetic? Read the next line very carefully. Stamp it in your memory. “Cities…don’t work.” On the horizon we have a whole futuristic change coming. (To give you a greater understanding of this, refer to a past writing entitled “As Go God’s People, So Goes the World.”) We do not deny that despite the widespread destruction, there were many good people saved during Katrina, and for those who cried out to God, many miracles did happen. In one place where the 30 foot wave hit, all the houses were obliterated, flattened, shattered, demolished and damaged so badly that the rest will have to be destroyed. One house stands alone near the beach. The inhabitants stayed during the storm and prayed with arms raised, begging for protection. The house miraculously received no damage except water damage. God wants to save you.

The Gulf Coast cannot be protected unless it changes the direction of its way of life. The beach with the nakedness of swimsuits and the lewdness of the lifestyles that are encouraged is simply accepted as nothing wrong. Our pulpits must preach what is sinful because many Catholics are participants. The gambling industry is too big and powerful to fight unless Catholics who have influence because of the position they are in, use that voice to speak against the evils that have found a home in their cities. Both the Church hierarchy and lay Catholics from the Gulf Coast who are in politics or other circles of influence must begin to denounce this trade, speaking out boldly against it. Gambling is not a game. Because Protestants read the Bible, many understand gambling is not a game but a curse, breeding and deeply increasing every social disorder there is. Casinos and the gambling within them literally double all social disorders within a 50 mile radius when they move into communities, according to studies.23 We often hear of sponsored “game” trips to Mississippi. A lie. No amount of disguising gambling with the word “games” will make God see it any other way. If we accept that gambling is not displeasing to God and that there is nothing wrong with it, we then must explain why one changes the word “gambling” to “games” The name is changed to suppress the conscience and is, therefore, an admission that gambling is not the will of God. So man cons himself, lying to himself and can pretend it’s now O.K. to do it if it’s just a “game.” Yes, it is true that the Catholic Catechism states under “games of chance” that they “are not in and of themselves contrary to justice.” But to fit that criteria you would be talking about your children playing “Go Fish” with cards. The Catechism also states, “The passion of gambling risks enslavement.” Casinos or support of them by visiting, being entertained by them, supports an unfair system of wagering. Casinos always come out way ahead. Slot machines are calculated against the user and are not left up to chance, but are rigged to cheat the user. The Catechism says that both unfair waging and cheating are grave matters. If you do not significantly suffer from visiting casinos as an individual, what about your brother who does, or the use of your time in such idleness, or money which could have been spent on helping neighbors in need? It is an indisputable fact that casinos cause an incalculable amount of human misery. Scripture relates, “Do nothing that causes your brother to fall.” A Christian cannot be indifferent in his desire for entertainment by supporting something that fosters such widespread devastation in society.

The bishops of the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi are bishops over every citizen in their diocese. They are the bishops over every Catholic, yes, but they also are the bishops of their diocese over every Baptist, Methodist, Non-Denominational Christian, as well as over every non-believer and every single citizen. It doesn’t matter whether other denominations or religions recognize that to be so. God recognizes it to be so. The bishop is responsible for every soul in his diocese and as such, is responsible in protecting each person from the spiritual dangers that are prevalent in the ways of life of the town inhabitants, and he is responsible for warning them to eradicate these elements. The bishops must be courageous, clear and uncompromising in God’s ways, and by being so they would be pleasantly surprised at how Catholics and non-Catholics alike would follow them. They literally are the only power source that can act, if they fear God and not man. It is time for all of us not to practice quietism. This age and what is coming to us in the future, through tribulation, should be an impulse that, first, we live holy lives and secondly, we speak and remind all of the violations of God’s precepts which threatens peaceable living but if lived is the protection of our society. Out of love, all of us must stop being timid and encourage holy and righteous living. Yes, you will be persecuted, and that means every Christian from the bishops to the man in the pew, but we are to rejoice in that persecution, for Jesus’ words quoted in Luke makes a statement about the purpose of persecution:

“It will lead to your giving testimony.”

It’s a beautiful thing that after being persecuted, put on trial before judges, handed over to unbelievers, and mocked by family, that Scripture relates it will spread your witness of giving testimony of what it means to be Christian. And to be Christian is to love. One of those aspects of love means we are to support our priests and bishops and to encourage them by holy living. We must convey to them that we are ready to walk through the fire with them. They are to do the same. Atlanta’s Archbishop Gregory said the same in Rome to the Synod.

“We Bishops, in our role as primary preacher in our local churches must lead in our own good example rather than merely asking our priests and deacons to be better prepared homilists for our people.” 24

That means sometimes as the Catholic laity, we, out of love and strong conviction, show priests how much our faith means to us. While in Mississippi, some of our crew working in hurricane relief from Caritas were told Mass for Sunday would be at 5:00 p.m. When we showed up, the priest sent word he was too tired because of the trials of Hurricane Katrina. A second person went to him and said we haven’t had Mass. He sent word back that all were absolved from Sunday Mass, that he was too tired. At that point, a third person, one of our Caritas community members who had never missed Sunday Mass in his whole life went to him and said, “Father, we are tired too. We’ve worked before daybreak to after nightfall. We are Catholics and we deserve Mass and we are going to have Mass. We are all waiting.” He stood for a moment, a little startled, and said, “I’ll be there in a few moments.” He celebrated an incredible Mass and admitted afterwards that some Masses you will remember the rest of your life. This was one of them, amidst the ruins of his church and destruction all around.

Every Christian must be convicting by standing by their faith especially when not doing so would destroy the spiritual life. Lay people are over ready, very ripe, and will join in when the pulpits increase the call to reform and transform society. It’s time to be courageous and give no ear to objections or rationalizations, such as we can’t get rid of Mardi Gras because it’s important to tourism, it’s tradition, etc., etc., etc. It’s rejection time, clear and simple. It’s time for the cleaning of the temple of the heart and a call to spiritual rebirth. The bishops are to be held in esteem as our spiritual fathers and more connected to the flock in understanding their spiritual need. They need to realize that there are so many who are spiritually hungering for protection and on speaking loud and clear about those elements of society which will cause us all to suffer more in the future if nothing is done about them today.

On October 9, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Cardinal Galen, an outspoken Cardinal during WWII who did not remain silent to Hitler. Pope Benedict said of the example of the Cardinal:

“Faith cannot be reduced to a private sentiment, perhaps to be hidden when it becomes uncomfortable, but requires consistency and bearing witness - including publicly - on behalf of man, justice and truth.” 25

New Orleans can rise up to be a Golden City of God, the whole Gulf Coast can. Saints have led whole nations to be gloriously adorned in holiness. If this does not happen, it needs to be abandoned. Is this too strong, too difficult of a call to hear? Not if you recall God’s command to Abraham and Lot. When it became obvious that their cities would not change and would continue down a depraved path, God called them to leave those cities. Had they not left, they would not have escaped the destruction of what followed. Leaving was their salvation.

Lastly, we can look at the Gulf Coast and point our finger at its many casinos. And New Orleans certainly has much to offer in the way of “glitter” and idols. So we could say that God allowed Hurricane Katrina to purify these places of sin. But then what of Our Lady’s recent message of September 25, 2005? She uses the word “you” or “your” six times.

September 25, 2005

“Dear children! In love I call you: convert, even though you are far from my heart. Do not forget, I am your Mother and I feel pain for each one who is far from my heart; but I do not leave you alone. I believe you can leave the way of sin and decide for holiness. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

Her messages are for Her children, which “you” are one of: “I call you;” “you are far from my heart;” “I am your mother;” “I do not leave you alone;” “I believe you can leave the way of sin.” We’ve missed the boat if we think recent events have to do with others living sinful lives or living in towns with indifference, accepting degradation as part of their city’s culture. Where are the false light and glitter and idols in your life, in your heart, in your town or city? Our Lady says it’s your heart that needs cleaning, it’s your heart that is far from Hers, and it’s your heart that hasn’t left the way of sin. However, the story and experience of Hurricane Katrina is just as Our Lady said; in the midst of the purifying fire, “…I do not leave you alone…” She comes to be with us, to make Her presence known to us, and to give us courage and confidence that even in the midst of the greatest disaster that has ever hit our nation, we are not forgotten, we are not alone.

A father chastises those he loves so to lead his children back to the way of righteousness and holiness. For this reason we can rejoice even in our sufferings as we see God calling this nation back to Himself. The first Sunday after Hurricane Katrina, Mass was held outside on the Mississippi coast. The following was taken from the homily:

“There was once a king who came in possession of a large, beautiful, unique and very costly diamond. All who saw it were in awe of it, but it had come with a flaw - a scratch had disfigured it. The king called experts from all over the kingdom to see what could be done to restore the diamond to its original beauty. There was none who knew how this could be done. Finally, a priest came forward and said that he could make the diamond far more beautiful than it was in its present state. The king gave him the diamond. When the diamond was returned to the king, he found the priest to have been true to his word. It was transformed into a much more beautiful stone; for the priest had carved a flower within the diamond. The scratch had become the flower’s stem."

The priest who told this story faced a small crowd of about 50 people.

“We are the diamond in the story…” he said, “our community has been scratched this week; we have been injured. But we have so many signs that God has remained with us throughout this experience, and out of our injuries, He will make of us a more beautiful diamond. We have reason to praise God. Let us praise Him together this morning and thank Him for His care over us.”

Is it unrealistic or idealistic that the Gulf Coast can be transformed? The character of Our Lady’s message constantly displays a call that we are to transform our world. And what if it is impossible to reform areas where city counsils and mayors dictate and legislate immoral statutes over our communities and families? It is almost always the cities that allow the corruption of a moral way of life. It is for this reason that early Christian communities sprang up, and we are entering a time when close-knit small communities will spring forth as the Caritas community flourishes in a way of life here. If not now, sometime in the near future, small communities will grow to protect their way of life. There will be places of life where one’s spirit is nourished. It is part of Our Lady’s plan for this to happen, and it is clear for those who have carefully walked with Our Lady in prayer that She leads us not to mega churches, mega cities, and the like, but more on a micro scale where neighbors know neighbors and can be communities which foster Christian love.

It is not the intention of this writing to burden people more than they are. But you who call yourself a child of Mary must have pondered where the apparitions of Our Lady would lead to one day. Recall the great exodus of God’s people led by Moses. Our Lady is the Moses of our time. We believe this. We know how difficult it is to leave behind everything familiar to strike out on an unknown course. We don’t pretend it is going to be easy. You may say this is easy for us to say, that we have it made. As Our Lady said:

December 25, 2002

“…This is a…time of great trials for all those who desire to follow the way of peace…”

Do we have it made? There was a tremendous price paid to establish the Community of Caritas, tremendous sacrifice, suffering and tears. We have been attacked, slandered, mocked and accused of being a cult simply by answering Our Lady’s call to conversion. We have been the object of peoples’ scorn who have continually tried to stop and destroy our way of life based on Our Lady’s messages. We have worked from before sunrise to after sundown, often times through the night, day in and day out, year after year to carve out this way of life. We have had to slay our own desires and our own wills in order to be a people of one mind and one heart for Our Lady. But despite all that, our way of life flourishes even in the midst of tragedies. Though threatened by destruction many times over, Our Lady has always given us an escape. We live in peace though the world around us is filled with unpeace. It has never been our thought to save ourselves...we simply keep our eyes on Our Lady and follow Her. In so doing, we have carved out a path in the forest for others to follow. Hurricane Katrina was an invitation to “consider the fig tree. When buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know summer is now near.”

Our Lady said to read your Bible.

“…little children, pray and read the Sacred Scriptures so that through my coming you discover the message in Sacred Scripture for you…”

We are to look at Scripture, at Our Lady’s messages, and how the saints live. Watch for the “fig tree warning” and realize Heaven is shaken in our time. The answer of why so many disasters and failures of society? The sum adds up to misfortune after misfortune, doubling man over in tribulation but can, if we pray, help us to see what the signs of the time are. Our Lady says we are in a time of great trial for those who wish to follow the way of peace. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God is at hand, and Our Lady’s Call to Conversion is a serious call. We are responsible as Church members to follow Our Lady, and live out in life what the Church teaches. It is our only security to navigate through tribulation.

Our Lady said in 1984-1985:

“Carry out your responsibility, and do what the Church asks you to do.”

This newsletter is written in love. We realize some will resist these writings, but truth is always resisted. We certainly will have some write to us, after reading these writings, and ask to be taken off our mailing list. But we know from past experience that we will have 20 others who will add their names to the one lost. This should be a lesson that we, out of love for our brothers, need to encourage holy living even though there will be some whose sensitivity will be hurt. Jesus’ teachings were often painful, and some turned away from Him because of it, even though it was the medicine needed to heal them and bring them peace.

Re-read Jesus’ words in Luke at the beginning of these writings and then do what God says in Isaiah 1:18:

“ Come, reason with me, says the Lord.”

Read your Bible everyday.

With Love to Encourage You to
Live a New Life as of Today,

Friend of Medjugojre

P.S. The following article was written to help inform you and form your conscience concerning the preceding writing. For you who have participated in the entertainment that casinos offer thinking it has harmed no one, read on.

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) studied and examined the impact and problems of gambling casinos brought into communities and found that their presence doubles the prevalence of problems associated with pathological gamblers within 50 miles of the casinos.26 With gambling, comes problems and the escalation of every single social illness that exists. Divorce, suicide, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, crime and poverty are but just a few of every societal problem which could be named.27 Casinos and its bad fruits gives clear evidence to be anti-God. One only has to look at gambling casinos raucously infected, disease ridden, rotten fruit to see the oozing sore that has damaged our nation’s moral fabric and merits punishment through natural disasters, plagues and other acts of God. There are literally millions of stories that can reveal such facts, but “millions” are classed as statistical and not likely to move hearts to change the ways of society. So the following is one story of millions that shows for our nation to continue, we need to think about the wake-up call of Katrina. We must purify our society of abominable ways that cause us to lose God’s protection.

Dave traveled to St. John, the small Kansas farm town where he had grown up and where the father he revered was buried.

Dave is a licensed counselor who counsels gambling and suicide hot lines. A very experienced social worker, he talks addicts through their toughest moments. He knows the demonic monster casinos are. He absolutely hates casinos and he knows the story. Stories like the 16-year old boy who attempted suicide after losing $6,000 on lottery tickets. Stories like a middle-aged couple in Joliet, Illinois who both committed suicide after the wife accumulated $200,000 in casino debts.29

Dave also knows about the statistics like a survey of 400 by Gamblers Anonymous in which 2/3 had contemplated suicide, ½ had a definite plan to kill themselves, and nearly 80% wanted to die. The study showed that whenever casinos moved into an area, suicide level for visitors and the residents of the community surrounding the casino run abnormally high and within a 50-mile radius of the casinos, social ills associated with addictive gambling double.

Dave sat by his father’s grave on a chilly, December 29, day last year warmed by a leather coat that his dad had left him. Reflecting.

Reflecting back…before his deep aversion to casinos when he and his wife took a vacation to Las Vegas to see some shows. Just for fun they played the slot machines. Dave had a small win. That win hooked him and he began going to the casinos close to Topeka. The false glitter of what the casinos offered grew in him until finally he went with his wife to Harrah’s Casino operation where he underwent the voluntary humiliation of fingerprinting and paperwork that would ban him from the casino for life. Dave sat reflecting on brighter days where he grew up and memories of his father, family, joys and thought about what he had done earlier that day. He had gone to the Golden Eagle Casino a little past Harrah’s. He lost again.

The availability of the casinos was too much tempation, and there in that small Kansas farm town visiting his father’s grave, Dave took a memento from the brighter days with his dad. His shotgun… held it to his mouth and pulled the trigger…

A grief beyond sad for the family, a fruit of the glitter and idols of the casinos that the gambling industries, in their greed for money at any cost, don’t want you to know. As one individual who lives near a casino said, “They don’t tell you about the suicides in the parking lot.” While sitting at his dad’s grave, Dave had written a note to his beloved wife on that terrible December 29, Sunday. She was with her family celebrating a late Christmas. They both had been at Dave’s family’s celebration only four days earlier. His last note cried out that if his family knew the pain, desperation and shame he woke up with every morning, they would not want him to have to go on. Yet his wife, knowing his secret of gambling, had always supported him.

Kathy Bassett, Dave’s sister, at her home in Topeka, Kansas, says, “I hate casinos! They killed my brother. I would rather take a beating than walk into a casino.” It doesn’t end there. Kathy has more reasons than Dave’s death for hating casinos.

Kathy’s mother, now 73, had her condominium paid for and enough retirement to make ends meet. But in the late 1990s, she discovered casinos only 20 minutes away from her Topeka home. Now she’s back working full time as a nurse. She has to pay off a $1,600 a month Chapter 13 Bankruptcy judgment—a direct result of her new gambling addiction.

And there’s more. Kathy Bassett’s son, Jason Bassett, went to work for Harrah’s when it opened nearly a decade ago. He was a good blackjack dealer, and transferred to Nevada to work at a Harrah’s owned casino there, becoming a “pit boss” and trusted member of the team. Somehow, he found a way to embezzle funds from the casino to support his own gambling lifestyle and charitable interests. “He was acting like Robin Hood,” Kathy explains, “giving money to impoverished friends and trying to help the family.”

Nevada, where the gaming commission holds sway in every political circle, is no place to be caught cheating a casino. Despite his spotless record, his stacks of character references, his three children and his supportive family, Jason, 28, was to become an example to all casino employees. His Nevada judge handed down the maximum sentence for a single offense—four to 10 years in the penitentiary. Jason’s wife and children have moved to Kansas where Kathy will help them until he is released and can begin making payments on hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution. “He’ll never pay it off,” Kathy says.

She misses her son, and she feels every day like her brother Dave should come walking through the doorway, but he never does. “If we had only known,” she laments. “I would have taken a leave of absence and stuck myself to him like a tick.” David was her only sibling. “We were as close as a brother and sister could ever be.” On her son’s behalf, she also regrets, “I should have known. He gave money to my mother and helped my brother. He said he had won the money gambling. I just should have known that isn’t possible.”

The Bassett family story is a synopsis of the ABC’s of gambling—Addiction, Bankruptcy and Crime. The National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling (NCALG) has been telling state governments for years that the deadly alphabet of misery will arrive on community doorsteps three to five years after casinos open. The Bassett family provides living—and dying—proof.

Final comments from Dave’s widow: “Their rewards club offerings would get him to go up there just to receive the little incentive gift or whatever. But then he would end up gambling—sometimes thousands of dollars in a night. I told him that the ‘VIP’ on the members’ rewards card should really stand for ‘Very Impaired Person.’ Eventually he came to a point where he absolutely hated the casinos, but he couldn’t stop himself anymore.

“What was worse is that, as a mental health professional, he was very aware of his addiction and was humiliated by it. He felt horrible that his work was to help others with their compulsions, yet he couldn’t control his own. It tore him up. He was too ashamed to even go for help. He felt that banning himself from Harrah’s might be enough of a barrier, but obviously it wasn’t.

“Harrah’s ‘official position’ that they don’t want problem gamblers is a lie. They wouldn’t have ‘platinum’ players club levels if they didn’t want compulsive gamblers. If you ever see the casino hold an event for their high rollers, most of them look like they don’t have enough money to pay for the basic necessities of life. David gambled $113,000 in 2003, and nobody at Harrah’s ever blinked an eye.”

While this is a personal story, it is not an isolated one. Multiply it by a million and you have a national moral crisis. Experts say casinos’ addictive power is not like any other addiction. Neither is its impact on the morals of a nation. With these sins of our nation, as we sink into a deeper and deeper abyss, is it any surprise that Life Magazine stated the events in 1993 were the three most climatic weather events in history and that since that record breaking weather of 1993, they continue to be greater than the previous years as the “never befores,” that happened in 2005 have shown us.? It is clear that greater and greater catastrophes parallel the moral breakdown as both increase. It is plain and clear the power of nature is shaken by the voice of God who is listening to the heart of men.
