“It is almost incomprehensible the power that is available to us.  A power which all armaments, such as weapons, bombs, ships, missiles, aircraft, and troops from all the armies of the world combined together, now in the present as well as all past history’s armaments, does not equal to one person’s fasting from the heart for one day.” -  a Friend of Medjugorje

Community of Caritas Fasting

Italian Bread is a favorite of the community and a recipe rich in tradition from a Friend of Medjugorje’s family. This bread recipe is well over 100 years old, handed down through the family. For this reason, it is a heritage that will cultivate love; love within the family, love of bread, and love of fasting. For the children, learning how to make the bread they love with people they love is an added sweetness.

Kids love bread! Children today are being raised without any spiritual fiber.  We witness a positive attitude to the children toward fasting and a love for bread. Virtues that are learned at an early age are easily held as virtues throughout one’s life. The community kids are never asked to fast as we do on Wednesday and Fridays, except from sweets, but from a young age, they learn by example and often eat bread with us as if it were a normal meal.

The world has many demons. This is manifested in nations, in the Church, in families, in atrocities committed everywhere. Prayer is necessary, but prayer alone is only half the power needed for an exorcism that must take place to defeat the evil in our own world. The Scriptures confirm this in the Book of Matthew, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting.” (Mt 9:29).

The Community of Caritas fasts twice a week on bread and water in obedience to Our Lady of Medjugorje’s very clear message of June 16, 1983:

“...Fast twice a week on bread and water...”

In the Caritas Community, fasting is a joyful sacrifice for Our Lady, lived together in unity. The adults fast. The youth fast. By the positive witness of the adults and youth, even the younger children voluntarily choose to participate in the fasts. It is part of the community’s culture, and it builds the spiritual fiber needed to navigate and endure the difficult times we are in.

In addition to the regular twice a week fasts, two to five times a year, the community does a nine-day bread and water fast – that is nine days straight on bread and water only. A Friend of Medjugorje instituted the nine-day fasts in the community after first doing them by himself. For the first time in 2001, the community invited people across the nation who wanted to participate in a nine-day fast with the community.  It was a surprise when even people from other nations joined the fast, especially since one of the main intentions of the fast was for the United States of America. Approximately 2,600 people across the world joined in the nine-day fast that first year. Even now, each year, hundreds of people still participate from every part of the world. A nine-day fast purifies the heart, mind, and soul, and brings one to a spiritual clarity that is not achieved without the fast.

Many people, even people who follow Medjugorje, wrongly think that fasting is “not for them,” or that they do not really “have” to fast to be living Our Lady’s messages. A Friend of Medjugorje has always taught that everything is a decision. If you make a decision that you will fast, then you can fast. Our Lady will give the grace if one desires it. There are many resources available in the asting section you can access below to help those who desire to answer this directive from Our Lady of Medjugorje.

Our Lady said on January 25, 2001:
“Dear children! Today I call you to renew prayer and fasting with even greater enthusiasm until prayer becomes a joy for you. Little children, the one who prays is not afraid of the future and the one who fasts is not afraid of evil. Once again, I repeat to you: only through prayer and fasting also wars can be stopped -- wars of your unbelief and fear for the future.”
