The first call and invitation of Our Lady is peace. She said on the third day of Her apparitions:

“Peace, peace, peace! Be reconciled! Only peace. Make your peace with God and among yourselves. For that, it is necessary to believe, to pray, to fast, and to go to Confession.”

Marija received this message on June 26, 1981, after she had the apparition with the other visionaries on top of Apparition Mountain. While Marija went down the mountain, she was mysteriously pushed to the side of the trail by an unseen force. She saw the Virgin again. Our Lady was crying and there was a bare wooden cross behind Her. Later the Mother of God said that Her name for these Apparitions of Medjugorje was “The Queen of Peace.” Then on Monday, August 24, 1981, many people in Medjugorje, including Father Jozo Zovko, saw a large inscription in the sky on top of Mount Krizevac. The word “MIR” appeared in large burning letters. “MIR” is Croatian for “peace.” This is the central message of Medjugorje.

What is the meaning of the word “peace” in Christian tradition? In Hebrew, “shalom” indicates an idea of wholeness and unity. Jerusalem, for instance, means the “City of Peace,” or more accurately, the “Seeing of Peace.” This city is symbolically the place of unity between God and man. In Psalm 122, we have a song of peace for the “City of Peace.” And in verse 3, we find the idea of wholeness and harmony: “Jerusalem built as a city with compact unity.” Jerusalem is the place of peace not only because it is one, and united as a city, but also because this city is called to have complete unity with God, to be in harmony with God. From all this we can discover the real meaning of peace. Peace is harmony between God and man.

We are all called to accept Our Lady’s invitation and call for peace. Through Her messages that She has been given these past 33 years, She is showing us how to discover the real meaning of peace in our lives, amidst all the trials and difficulties that we experience in our lives and in the world today. Through listening and living Her messages, we can experience the blessing of peace from God.
